    Living above or beside a pub, bar or late venue produces a noise profile no other source matches: sustained low-frequency music bass, unpredictable crowd peaks at closing, and it all happens between 22:00 and 02:00 when you are trying to sleep.

    Bass is the hard part. Amplified music concentrates energy at 40-125Hz, below the range where glass mass alone does much. Cavity depth is the controlling variable, and it is where budget installations fail on this application.

    Why bass is different

    Sound insulation from mass falls away as frequency drops. At 40-80Hz, doubling glass thickness buys you very little. What works is decoupling: two independent leaves separated by a deep air gap, so the system resonance sits below the problem band and attenuation rises above it.

    This is why we specify the deepest cavity the reveal permits — 200mm or more — on nightlife-affected properties, and why we will tell you honestly when a shallow reveal limits what is achievable.

    Crowd noise and smoking areas

    In practice, most complaints are not about the music at all — they are about twenty people talking outside a pub door at 23:30. Voice energy sits at 500Hz-2kHz, which acoustic laminate blocks extremely well. Crowd noise is usually the component that improves most dramatically.

    What we can and cannot fix

    If bass is arriving through a shared party wall or floor structure from a venue below, glazing will not solve it. Where the path is airborne through the window, a deep-cavity 10.8mm system typically removes crowd noise entirely and reduces perceived bass to a background level.

    Voices, bass and the pattern of a London night

    Living above or beside a pub, bar or late-licence venue produces two distinct problems. The first is speech: groups outside on the pavement, smokers, taxi pickups and closing-time dispersal, which is mid-frequency, intermittent and cognitively hard to ignore because the brain tries to parse it. The second is amplified bass from inside the venue, which is low-frequency and travels through both air and structure.

    Speech responds extremely well to secondary glazing — sealing the window layer removes the leakage path that carries intelligible voices indoors, and the improvement is usually described as dramatic. Bass responds less completely, particularly where it is partly structure-borne through a shared party wall or floor.

    Why an evening survey matters here more than anywhere

    A daytime measurement outside a Soho or Shoreditch flat tells you almost nothing about the problem. The levels that keep people awake occur between 22:00 and 02:00, and they are event-driven rather than continuous, so we run the measurement in that window and record both the ambient level and the peaks.

    Specification and ventilation in flats above venues

    For sleeping rooms facing a venue we specify 10.8mm acoustic laminate with the deepest achievable cavity and a fixed or lift-out panel, because a panel with no meeting stile seals hardest and these windows are rarely a daily ventilation route. In suitable configurations that reaches up to 54dB reduction.

    Ventilation has to be solved deliberately, since the whole point is that the window stays shut on a Friday night. We review trickle vents and, in flats with no alternative, recommend mechanical extract so the room does not become stuffy — a sealed bedroom with no air path is a different problem, not a solution.
