    The World Health Organization sets 35dB as the guideline for undisturbed sleep and 30dB as the level for a genuinely quiet bedroom. A London bedroom on any main road, bus route or rail corridor typically measures 52-62dB overnight — 20-30dB above the target.

    Bedrooms are where we recommend spending the acoustic budget. A quiet bedroom with a noisy reception room is a liveable house; the reverse is not.

    Why the sleep threshold matters

    Sleep disruption is driven by peak events, not the average level. A single 65dB bus pass-by will trigger a micro-arousal even if the room average is acceptable. Reducing peaks below roughly 35dB stops the arousal response, which is why the specification targets peak reduction rather than an averaged figure.

    Ventilation without losing the seal

    The commonest objection to bedroom glazing is stuffiness. Sliding and hinged units both open fully, so summer ventilation is unaffected on quiet nights.     Getting the specification right first time

    Bedroom windows are the ones we most often see under-specified.     Sleep is a peak-level problem, not an average one

    Bedrooms are the room where noise complaints actually originate, and the reason is that sleep disturbance is driven by events rather than by average levels. A single motorbike, a slammed car door or a night bus pulling away can pull someone out of light sleep even when the average night-time level in the room looks acceptable on paper.

    So we specify bedrooms to the highest acoustic tier we sensibly can rather than to an average target: the heaviest laminate the frame will carry, the deepest cavity the reveal allows, and continuous compression sealing with no gasket discontinuity.     Ventilation, temperature and the sealed-room trade-off

    A bedroom that is quiet but stuffy is a worse bedroom. Sealing the window layer means the ventilation strategy has to be deliberate: trickle vents in the primary window kept operable, an openable secondary panel for the hours when noise is not an issue, or mechanical background ventilation where neither is available.

    Temperature usually improves at the same time. Removing the draught and the radiant cold from the glass makes the whole room usable in winter, and in summer the secondary layer measurably slows solar gain on west-facing rooms — though it is not a substitute for shading.
